So recently, in my spare time, I’ve been wasting time watching the T.V. series, LOST, on Netflix. The idea of being stranded on island, with little chance of being rescued is a pretty scary thing. And, every time I watch an episode, I find myself wondering how I would react to such a life-changing event. How would I handle the stress of being without family, my comfy bed, and familiar surroundings? How would I deal with actually having to hunt for my food, kill it and prepare it, without convenience of tools and resources? How I would deal with the constant threat of the unknown predators that perceive me as prey at any given moment? As strong, and independent as I think I am in our civilized environment, I have to say, I would probably be a bit up tight to say the least. What about you? How you hold up in the wild, being so vulnerable and without the convenience we have in today’s society? I do think that when necessary, instincts kick in, and the skills required to hunt and survive are innate, and we can adapt accordingly. But I guess regardless of where we’re at, it’s always adapting, and surviving Sure we have it easy, living in a society that has so much STUFF, so much abundance, and so much opportunity. But it can become a constant challenge trying to keep up with all the possibilities, and options, and very easy to get lost in the chaos of life. Thus we lose our independence, and possibly the ability to really thrive. Sometimes I wonder if would be easier to be stuck, stranded on an island… Our westernized lifestyle is bombarded with contradicting messages, things to do, and places to go. The daily grind often consists of (on average), 2-4 hours a day in a vehicle, stuck in traffic, commuting to and from work, where we spend 8-10 hours a day, usually sitting in an office. That leaves about 3-4 hours for personal errands, make dinner, clean up, maybe workout or watch your favorite show. Next thing you know, your waking up to do it all over again. In addition to the daily grind, we are addicted to technology. Whether it’s a computer screen, a smart phone or tablet, it’s usually in arm’s reach away. And even I’ll admit that it’s hard to remove yourself from the notifications, and fancy apps that are supposed to make life more productive, more convenient and more “in-touch”. But in reality, I think it does the opposite. There are so many apps, that you end up getting about 5 different ones, that essentially do the same thing, and usually you don’t end up using any of them. So instead, they just fill up your phone’s empty space with clutter and distraction. And with Facebook, twitter, linked in, text messaging, email and whatever else there is to stay “connected”; we’ve removed the need to talk to each other. Making a phone call seems foreign to most. So I wonder. Are we really more productive, more connected, or are we more distracted and disconnected…? I guess it depends on how you let the consequences of the daily grind consume you. But let’s face it, this lifestyle isn’t healthy, and as a nation, we are sicker than ever. And regardless of how resilient you think you are, you are human, and will be affected to some degree. With the combination of environmental stressors, the convenience of technology, toxins in the soil, food and air, the greed of unethical food businesses, and the outdated messages from authorities; doesn’t do a body good. And in reality the consequences are very significant. For instance, chronic pain and fibromyalgia was never a problem until the last decade. Doctors don’t even know how to treat it, so they prescribe pain medication as a Band-Aid solution. Then there is the ridiculous rise in diabetes (especially in children) which is directly related to the excessive amounts of processed foods, and sugar substitutes that is in everything. Another major consequence is the increase in depression that is predicted to be an actual health epidemic by 2020. This health concern is again, related to highly processed foods, the fear of fat, and the infrastructure of society. If we don’t take some serious action, we are doomed, because this lifestyle is killing us and holds little hope for the future generations to come. And that serious action needs to start with you. What we need to understand is that health management is a personal responsibility. Not you’re doctors, not the government, but YOU. And the medical system should serve as an aid to help in emergency situations, not as “legit” drug dealer, there to Band-Aid the symptoms induced by a poor lifestyle. Now I’m not saying this is the case for everyone that has a health condition that depends on prescription drugs or doctors. But in large part, many people are suffering from preventable diseases, and health problems, that are completely reversible with healthy eating, exercise and stress management. And I know it’s not completely your fault. It’s hard to avoid out there, however, it is your fault if you don’t do your research, and practice “self-care” instead of relying on health care. The good news is, no matter what health situation you’re in right now, small steps toward healthier habits can yield big results. And you’ll save time, money, and have tons more energy to get more done. Here are 3 things you can do right now to start your self-care plan: #1: Make time to prepare real food. This does take some planning, but you won’t have to worry about where you’re going to go for lunch, and you’ll save money on eating out. I prefer to do all my grocery shopping on the weekend. Then I plan what meals I’m going to have and always make enough for left overs, that way I have lunch the next day and maybe even dinner. [...]
